Puerto Rico also had a referendum on statehood, but it hasn’t gotten much media attention. Statehood received over 60% of the vote. By tradition, Republicans have opposed statehood because they view it as an increase in Democratic support and because of language issues.
If the Republican’s are serious about Hispanic outreach, this would be a perfect opportunity and would have major symbolic significance.
