There are two things that bother me about this take on the Ferguson riots. The article is fine, in and of itself. However, I haven’t seen many folks discuss what would have happened if officer Wilson (the white policeman) had been black. I suspect that it would have been much easier to de-escalate the situation. The Ferguson police force needs to be 80% black.
If you need to stop and frisk in order to deal with “broken windows” policing, let those black officers who make the stops live in the same neighbourhoods, justify their actions to their neighbours and agree to have their sons subject to the same scrutiny.
I also have a lot of respect for President Obama. If you can, do some reading about Jackie Robinson becoming the first black player in Major League Baseball. His job was to put up with a lot of crap in order to make way for all the black players who followed. His position wasn’t just, it wasn’t fair and it affected Robinson’s health.
Both Robinson and Obama had to be first with all it’s horrid exposure. and venomous climate,
What’s important is the second black President of the United States of America? Corey Booker is a reasonable candidate for just such a position. It isn’t unthinkable. Sure, we might want a woman and then an Hispanic to have a kick at the can. But, Corey is young.
